What is One Seed, One Community?

The Cleveland Seed Bank’s One Seed, One Community (1S1C) program is an opportunity to celebrate growing food in Northeast Ohio. This is a season-long virtual event where participants will share our growing experiences around the same seed. Together we will share updates, solve problems and connect over how one small seed can bring us closer together.

What are we growing?

The Provider Bush Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)
A farmer’s market staple! Provider Bush Bean is a classic green bean with early production and large yields, a great starting bean for novice growers.

how to participate

1) Sign up to become part of our One Seed, One Community Google Group

2) Pick up free Provider Bush Bean seeds at your local Seed Library (or anywhere you get your seeds)

3) Plant your seed

  • We will plant directly outdoors June 1, 2024. Plant your seeds (or start over!) any time after June 1st. The Cleveland Seed Bank team will plant a new seed every month to grow alongside new members throughout the growing season.

  • Make sure to follow planting instructions on the packet! Or follow this handy Growing Guide.

  • Plant seed in a pot or outdoors in the ground. It doesn't matter as long as you can check on your plant’s progress (and get great pictures).

4) Document and share your seed journey within the One Seed, One Community Google Group

  • We will stay connected through a One Seed, One Community Google Group that all participants will use to share our pictures, thoughts and hopes for our Provider Bush Bean plants!

  • Members are asked to share weekly updates on how the plant is doing. (Don’t worry, we will remind you.)

What to expect:

  • After you sign up for One Seed, One Community, you will receive an email invitation with instructions on how to join the Google Group.

  • Questions are what this group is here for, so bring your questions big and small! No one is expecting perfection. Together, we will grow through learning what works and what doesn’t.

  • The Cleveland Seed Bank will share what we’re learning during our seed journeys through monthly social media posts featuring One Seed, One Community participants.

  • Participate as little or as much as you would like. It's up to you!
