Seed Steward Program

Join our Seed Steward Program and help us address the fundamental gap in the local food system: a regional, bio-diverse, and community-stewarded seed supply.

The Seed Steward Program works directly with Ohio growers - urban and rural farmers, gardeners, and community members — to sow, save and share open-pollinated seeds. Our goal is to collectively build a seed supply that is locally grown and regionally adapted.

As a Seed Steward, you will sign the Safe Seed Pledge, and commit to protecting seed integrity by preventing the contamination of genetically engineered or modified seeds.

We host hands-on workshops, offer on-site consultations and provide technical support throughout the growing season. By providing resources and information, the Program gives Stewards all the tools necessary to grow and save seed.

Milkweed Collections

Help Save the Monarch Butterfly! Participate in our annual Milkweed Seed Collection.

Monarchs are becoming increasingly threatened due to habitat loss and the use of herbicide. Experts estimate that over 90 percent of the eastern Monarch population has diminished over the past twenty years.

But you can help by growing milkweed in your garden and saving the seeds! Milkweed is an Ohio native and the sole host of the Monarch caterpillar. Saving seeds from milkweed in the community or in your garden is super easy. In late summer and early autumn, the seed pods mature and change from green to brown, split open and reveal the emerging seed.

How to Harvest Seeds from Milkweed Plants:

  1. Correctly identify the plant and make sure the seed pods and seeds are mature

  2. Pull the full pod from the plant stem and place in a brown paper bag

  3. Label the bag with as much information as you can (variety of milkweed, location, date, zip code, etc.)

  4. Schedule a time with our team to drop off milkweed seed at the Seed Bank office
